This is a blog post Stewart wrote about our weekend adventures, I love it when Stewart writes posts for our blog it makes things easier on me :) Enjoy!
This last weekend we took a day
trip to Boulder, CO. Boulder is the home of Celestial Seasonings, the herbal
tea company. We took a tour of their facility. It was really neat to hear the
story of how they began, and see how they make their teas today. It started
back in 1969. 4 high school friends thought people were drinking too much soda
pop and too much caffeine. They wanted to give people a natural, tasty, healthy
alternative. So they went up into the mountains around Boulder and collected
some herbs. They tried to sell their first tea bags as 'herbal infusion,' but
no one would buy them. Then they decided to call it herbal tea because you have
to allow it to steep like tea. The name, though not original, was a hit. The
name Celestial Seasonings was the nickname of one of the founders (it was the
summer of love after all).
My favorite part of the tour was
the mint room. They have to keep their peppermint in a separate storage room
otherwise they would have just 100 variations on peppermint tea. They let the
group step into the room for a minute or two during the tour. As soon as you
enter the room your eyes start to water and your nose and mouth feel like they
are on fire. Sophie had to step out, she didn't like it. Unfortunately they didn't let us take pictures during the tour, so we just took
a couple on the factory grounds afterwards.
We spent a few minutes wandering
in downtown Boulder. We saw street performers and panhandlers. Sophie enjoyed
some, and was scared by others. We must have looked like tourists because
everyone who asked for money seemed to come up and try to talk to us.
This last picture is of Sophie and
I at the planetarium in Laramie at the University of Wyoming campus. We went to
a show yesterday. It was fun to hear some of the stories of the constellations.
And yes, she wore a sticker on her forehead for the show.
